Hongos de Misiones: A Bountiful Journey of Fungi Discovery

In the lush province of Misiones, a unique project blossomed in 2011 with the vision to explore, research, and enhance the appreciation for the region’s wild mushroom diversity. Known as Hongos de Misiones, this initiative has made significant strides, currently working with around 35 identified edible species through sustainable practices, yielding over 400 kilograms of mushrooms annually.

Beyond the realms of research and production, Hongos de Misiones emphasizes education and community engagement. Regular workshops on mushroom recognition, identification, and sustainable harvesting take place across various townships in Misiones, reaching out to public schools, universities, and even extending to Buenos Aires. With approximately one to two workshops conducted monthly, the project capacitates over 250 individuals each season, spreading invaluable knowledge and skills.

The project also delves into a productive dimension by crafting and marketing dried mushrooms, native mushroom mixes, and pickled varieties. This not only adds value to an indigenous resource, but also fosters a responsible interaction with the surrounding forests, highlighting sustainable practices.

At the helm of Hongos de Misiones are Saúl Lencina and María de los Ángeles De Muro, who have been pioneering the initiatives in research, identification, and sustainable harvesting since the project’s inception in 2011. Over the years, the project has welcomed a growing network of mushroom collectors, students, educators, researchers, and enthusiasts eager to delve into Misiones’ mycological wealth.

Encompassing research, education, gastronomy, and local engagement, Hongos de Misiones thrives on the symbiotic relationships fostered with the communities and individuals participating in its diverse activities. It’s an evolving tapestry of shared knowledge and collaboration, weaving together nature and culture through the marvels of fungi.
