Colonia Chapá: A Different Way to Experience Misiones
In Colonia Alberdi, in the heart of Misiones, a growing tourism destination is inviting visitors to slow down, reconnect with nature and discover the authentic rural character of the province.
There is another way to experience Misiones.
Beyond the province’s iconic waterfalls and its most visited destinations, Colonia Chapá offers something quieter and more personal: rural landscapes, native forest, streams, productive farms, local flavors, birdwatching and experiences created around the people who live in the territory.
Located in Colonia Alberdi, Colonia Chapá is part of a tourism corridor developed through collaboration between local entrepreneurs, the municipalities of Colonia Alberdi and General Alvear, and the surrounding community. The initiative began in 2023 as a private-sector project and has continued to grow into an established rural and ecotourism destination.
Where nature becomes the destination
Colonia Chapá is not simply a place to visit. It is a collection of experiences.
Visitors can stay surrounded by nature, spend an afternoon at a rural farm, discover the production of yerba mate and tea, walk through protected natural areas, explore trails or dedicate time to one of the region’s increasingly popular activities: birdwatching.
The destination currently promotes experiences including Granja La Lechuza, tea experiences with Del Iguazú Infusiones, yerba mate experiences with Verdeada, and visits to local productive spaces.
This connection between tourism and local production gives Colonia Chapá a particularly authentic character. Rather than recreating rural life for visitors, the destination invites travelers to experience activities that are already part of the region’s identity.
A paradise for birdwatchers
For nature lovers and photographers, Colonia Chapá offers another compelling reason to visit.
The destination has become part of Misiones’ growing birdwatching tourism network, with dozens of species recorded across its natural areas. Among the sites promoted by the destination are Apepú, Área Natural Protegida La Lechuza, Tiny House, Parque Francisco Fiegler and Parque Natural Municipal El Tombo.
The numbers tell part of the story: Apepú has recorded 120 bird species, while La Lechuza has recorded 100, with additional biodiversity documented in the other observation areas.
For visitors, however, the experience is less about counting species than simply learning to look and listen.
Discovering the waterfalls
One of the newest attractions is the Parque Natural Municipal Saltos Dos Hermanas y Tobogán, located between Colonia Alberdi and General Alvear.
The natural area protects two waterfalls on the Arroyo Soberbio and features walkways, bridges and stairs surrounded by native vegetation. The site is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with free admission. Visitors leave their vehicles at the upper section and continue on foot, helping protect the natural environment.
The waterfalls add another dimension to the Colonia Chapá experience: a short walk through the forest leading to a landscape shaped by water, rocks and vegetation.
Rural tourism with a local identity
What makes Colonia Chapá particularly interesting is the way tourism is being developed.
The corridor was created around a simple idea: connect the attractions, entrepreneurs and communities of the region instead of treating each experience as an isolated destination.
That approach has allowed accommodations, farms, natural areas, recreational spaces and cultural activities to become part of a broader tourism identity.
In 2025, the corridor received the Bases para Municipios Turísticos Sostenibles recognition and was incorporated into the Ruta de las Aves de Misiones, reinforcing its profile as a sustainable and nature-based destination.
A slower side of Misiones
For international travelers, Colonia Chapá offers an opportunity to see a side of Misiones that is often overlooked.
Here, the journey is not about rushing from one attraction to another. It is about spending an afternoon at a farm, tasting regional products, walking through the forest, watching birds, discovering a waterfall or simply enjoying the landscape.
It is slow tourism with a distinctly misionero character.
And that may ultimately be Colonia Chapá’s greatest attraction: it allows visitors to experience Misiones not only as a spectacular natural destination, but as a living territory shaped by its people, its farms, its forests and its traditions.
